At Highfield French is taught by our specialist teacher across years 1-6. We believe high-quality language education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. Children are encouraged to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. The teaching of French also provides opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. We believe language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.
"At Highfield Junior School each child currently receives 1 hour of French tuition every week.
Primarily an oral approach is adopted with the emphasis of fun and enjoyment. Children learn songs, play games and take part in a variety of role play activities. Whole school activities include French Day and Languages Week.
In line with the new curriculum children are required to study some grammar and develop their skills in writing in the target language. Children are also encouraged to learn how to say hello in a variety of different languages around the world".
