Sports Update June 2019

English National Korfball Finals

On Saturday 1st June, 8 pupils from Highfield Junior School went to represent the school and the borough at the English National Korfball Finals. This event was held at the Copperbox Arena in the London Olympic Park and featured the top school and adult Korfball players in the country.

Our first game was against a very physical side who used their height advantage well to record a narrow 4-2 victory, meaning Highfield went into the Plate competition for the remainder of the day. We won our next two games comfortably (5-1 and 4-2), meaning we won the National Plate Trophy.

This is a fantastic achievement, ranking us in the top 5 schools for Korfball nationally. Well done to all the pupils involved.

Bromley Borough Cricket Tournament

On Thursday 6th June, the Highfield Cricket team attended the Bromley Borough tournament at Old Wilsonians Cricket club. We won all three of our group games in the morning, with excellent work behind the stumps from Henry B and consistent bowling from Dom B and Sam T being particular highlights. This meant we qualified for the semi final stage, in which we were grouped with Oak Lodge and Parish.

In our first game against Oak Lodge, we batted sensibly to record a score of 217, which we knew we would have to bowl and field well to defend. What followed was a superb display of both bowling and fielding, with Liam G snaffling a superb caught and bowled chance and Rishit holding his nerve to take a hattrick when Oak Lodge needed only 3 runs to win. Unfortunately, in our next game against Parish we lost a few too many wickets in a close defeat and were eliminated on wickets conceded, meaning we finished the day in joint third overall. A superb overall performance from everyone involved.

On Tuesday 4th June, Mr Coulson also took the Girls' Cricket squad to the Bromley Borough tournament at Hayes Cricket club. Our first match was against a strong team from local rivals Balgowan, and we were unfortunately on the wrong end of a narrow defeat.

Inspired by excellent batting at the top of the order from Zara P and Kushula, miserly bowling from Katie P and the wicket taking threat of our pace attack of Polly B and Mehar, the Highfield girls proceeded to win all 5 of their remaining games, including memorable wins against both Oak Lodge and Pickhurst. Well done to all of the Girls involved.
