Highfield juniors 026P.E. Intent

At Highfield, our approach to PE is to foster a culture of participation and enjoyment through physical activity, where children actively seek opportunities to participate, develop their physical literacy and enhance their social, emotional and physical well-being. Our focus is always on performance, not outcome, and children are encouraged to consistently analyse and evaluate their own and peers’ performances, with a view to improving.

Implementation

The PE curriculum is taught through the use of PE Hub, which is in line with the National Curriculum and used to aid teaching staff in their subject knowledge and planning of PE. Teachers are able to adjust and change lessons to suit the needs of their classes, but the scheme provides a strong basis of year group expectations. Each class has access to 2 sessions of high-quality physical activity every week. These are either taught by the class teacher or the PE lead. The use of coaches encourages further promotion of competition and skill progression, offering staff the possibility of enhancing their CPD. Each lesson children are given the opportunity to practise skills in a variety of ways and each lesson builds upon previous learning. Core skills are built upon progressively. In line with national expectations, we strive to have all Year 6 children leave the school with the ability to swim a minimum of 25m unassisted, promoting a positive and healthy activity that may be undertaken independently, out of school hours. We offer a wide range of sporting after school clubs run by both teaching staff and outside agencies such as Bromley Korfball Club. A range of inter and intra events run throughout the school year, giving children opportunities to take part in competitive sports.

Impact

Our curriculum aims to improve the health, wellbeing and fitness of all children at Highfield, not only through the sporting skills taught, but through the underpinning values and disciplines PE promotes. Through strong links with PHSE we promote the overall well-being and health of each child through teaching about self-discipline and that to be successful, children need to take ownership and responsibility of their own health and fitness. Children at Highfield make good progress in PE and are eager to attend after school clubs and competitive sports events.
